Johannesburg is on the coast and comes with Johannesburg beaches. So, you've probably supposed that it has some of the best beaches in this area and this is a supposition that is right as you find Port Elizabeth sporting some wonderfully clean and beautiful beaches with water whose temperature ranges between about 66 to 77 degrees F during the southern summer, but whose water stays acceptably warm even during the winter, ranging from 62 to 71 degrees F.

If you stop there you'll find the waters are calm and the beaches are clean. You'll find that this is a great combination if you want to stop and take advantage of a little aquatic break in your travels.

There are mainly two beaches and lake in the area where you can enjoy swimming and water sports.

Algoa Bay:
Sailing enthusiasts will likely find Algoa Bay to be a key attraction as the warm water and fair winds make this an attractive sailor's venue.

An interesting side trip that you might consider is Cape Recife, a nature preserve at the southwestern end of Algoa bay. Dominated by the reserve, you will find it best to bring your hiking boots because that's the best way to see the many small animals and birds that abound in this area.

On this western trek, don't be shocked if you see folks walking around in various states of dress because this is the area's clothing-optional beach.

If you opt to stay, you will likely find not only a sense of peace of mind but you will also find some world-class safe swimming. Since this is a clothing-optional beach, this only stands to reason.

Germiston Lake:
If you love water sports, you will definitely fall in love with Germiston Lake. The lake offers a playground for kids to enjoy in the rolling lawns. The nearby area of the lake is all green and those close to the nature will love to visit the lake often. The lake is close to Rondebult Bird Sanctuary, art centers and inner-city museums. The spot is perfect if you are planning a family picnic, especially with kids as they can enjoy and learn about a few birds in the birds sanctuary. As there is no entrance fee for the lake, this can also be an ideal spot for travelers who have a tight budget.
